Lesson Plans (Please Read Carefully!)

We are working on compiling a comprehensive database of past lesson plans. In the meantime, feel free to check out the information below.

What is a good lesson plan? Lesson plans should be tailored for students at different grades. After a fruitful year at Holy Angels last year, the teachers and our ICMC team have come up with some specific ideas for 2015-2016:

  • A lesson plan on budgeting and money management is always good. It is a good idea to teach the kids how to save money, the importance of saving and how to spend money responsibly.
  • Writing - help the students to write better!
  • We have done so many case studies at Kellogg, we can do the same with the students (of course, with easier cases from newspaper, etc.). We can help students develop their reading and critical thinking skills. (However, volunteers must be careful not to comment on contentious political, religious or any ideological topics!)
  • Have we talked about lessons on different cultures? Kellogg is a diverse community and we should bring our diversity to Holy Angels!
  • For 7th and 8th graders, instead of a different lesson for each visit, lesson continuity is important. For example, we may ask students to use the school year to come up with a business plan. We, as MBA students, can teach them how to conduct research, what the key business concepts are, how to draft a business plan, how to put together a good presentation and how to present! The idea is to help students to develop project management skills over a longer period of time. It is also important for those students to master some essential skills, such as writing and presentation. Volunteers who will be working with the 7th and 8th graders should discuss their project ideas with the teachers.
  • For the 5th and 6th graders, a similar, but less ambitious, lesson plan will work well. We should help students to develop project management skills. A longer-horizon project can help them focus on improving their work and doing more in-depth research.
  • For lower grades, individual lessons are good. Science experiments, drawing, craft, reading, videos, etc. are all good ideas. If we are uncertain, please ask a second-year Kellogg student for some advice!

"Hard" Resources

Some classroom supplies are available in our ICMC locker by 2nd year mailboxes. Contact your grade team leader for access. This will help save you time shopping for basics and save the club money!

Each team may also spend up to $20/visit to purchase supplies for lessons. Focus on making lesson plans engaging and educational, and buy what you need. Additional spend can be authorized by club leadership. Please refer to the Reimbursement tab for more details.

"Soft" Resources

The first place to look for resources is our club discussion board. Access from the banner at the top of our website:

  • Choose your relevant grade (and consider looking at grades close to yours).
  • Browse past lesson plans for inspiration or take a plan directly and modify/update it to make it appropriate for your age level.
  • Access files which may be relevant to you.
  • Remember to upload your lesson plans there to share with other teams and future volunteers! Your help is instrumental to our future success.

The second place to look for resources is the Evanston public library by McManus. The librarians there are extremely helpful. Please reach out to one of them and ask for ideas. The library has a great collection of books for volunteers to prepare their lessons. Last year, we designed an amazing science experiment with the help of a book from the library. The students were amazed!
