About Health Enterprise Management

Led by Professors Craig Garthwaite and David Dranove, Health Enterprise Management is designed for students interested in becoming well-rounded strategic leaders in the healthcare sector.

Flexible curriculum

Health Enterprise Management offers students the flexibility to tailor their curriculum to their career goals.  The flexible curriculum allows students to supplement coursework with other academic interests such as finance, marketing, or strategy. Students at all levels of prior health sector experience are welcome. 

Team-based learning

Health Enterprise Management students can learn entrepreneurship through hands-on, interdisciplinary initiatives such as NUvention, which brings Kellogg students together with Northwestern engineering, law, and medical students to create commercially viable medical technology business models. The Global Health Initiative is another popular interdisciplinary offering. Each quarter, students apply innovative business solutions to global health concerns by extending the reach of new healthcare technologies such as HIV testing devices into developing countries. Other relevant experiential course options include medical technologies in developing countries (KPPI-973-A), and medical innovation (HEMA-915).

Health Enterprise Management students explore professional options by visiting with dozens of potential healthcare employers who come to campus as well as through Kellogg’s active alumni network. Students have wide interests within the health sector and compete successfully for jobs in provider, insurer, and supplier organizations, as well as in consulting, investment banking, and other related sectors of the economy. Students accept positions across the US and abroad. 

Renowned professors

Professors bring both real-world knowledge and their published research to the classroom.  Professor Dranove's research focuses on problems in industrial organization and business strategy with an emphasis on the health care industry.  He has published nearly 100 research articles and book chapters and written five books, including The Economic Evolution of American Healthcare and Code Red. His textbook, The Economics of Strategy, is used by leading business schools around the world.

Chicago presence with a global reach

Our students benefit from being situated right outside Chicago during their time at Kellogg. In addition to Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago and its surrounding suburbs are home to many top hospitals such as Northwestern Memorial, University of Chicago, Advocate Health Care, and Rush University Medical Centers as well as large healthcare corporation headquarters including Walgreens, Abbott Laboratories, Baxter International, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals. It also boasts a growing startup scene including the prominent incubator 1871 and multiple health tech companies.
