Healthcare 101 Series

In the Fall Quarter, the Health Enterprise Management faculty provide an overview of the healthcare industry through a series of lectures over lunch. This is a great way for students who have an interest in healthcare as a potential career field but do not have extensive experience to learn more about the industry.

Broad Overview of U.S. Health System and Healthcare at Kellogg	Prof. Craig Garthwaite	An introduction to healthcare in the U.S. including recent trends and an overview of the Affordable Care Act. The Health Enterprise Management pathway at Kellogg is mapped out.
U.S. Health Insurance System (Public and Private)	Prof. Amanda Starc	An overview of the U.S. health insurance system including an analysis of the various ways Americans pay for their healthcare and how recent reforms are leading to new trends.
Health “Tech” & Start Ups	Prof. Pete McNerney	A guide from the experienced Prof. McNerney on how to secure venture capital funding for a healthcare startup. He advises students to know the environment, know the market, follow the money, and know their sources of capital, as the funding approach varies across healthcare sub-sectors.
Life Sciences: BioPharma	Prof. Craig Garthwaite	A discussion of the trade-off between incentivizing innovation and making drugs more affordable, an overview of the FDA approval process, an explanation of the role of PBMs, a discussion of why drug prices remain high for off-patent drugs that treat small patient populations, and more.
Health Providers: Operations	Prof. Jan Van Mieghem	An overview of hospital operations, including how the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (part of the ACA) attempts to change incentives of hospitals in order to reduce patient readmissions and the trade-offs between collaboration and interruptions among hospital staff.
Health Providers: Market-Level Perspective	Prof. David Dranove	A discussion of the recent trend in hospitals merging and acquiring physician practices, how physician behavior needs to change if we expect to bend the cost curve, the failure of electronic health records to yield the massive cost savings that were expected, and more.
