Focus for 1st Years this Week

1st Years

Didn't get invited to the J.P. Morgan Case Prep and/or targeted dinner?

Please don't get discouraged! The case prep was oversubscribed this year and had limited spots. Do not extrapolate from this single data point into believing that you have little chance of getting an internship in J.P. Morgan. It just means that you need to work a little harder for the firm to get to know you better, and there will be plenty of opportunity for that to occur with the upcoming Wall Street Trek, Holiday Bank Mixer and the J.P. Morgan M&A challenge.

Feedback from J.P. Morgan Case Prep

For those that went to the J.P. Morgan Case Prep, we received the following feedback from a couple of bankers:

  • Overall, they were happy with the performance
  • Thought students' knowledge of general markets/happenings was good
  • Felt people need to get their stories shortened/tighter/more crisp
  • Mentioned a lot of people still don't know why banking. They said going to Wall Street Trek with a weak story will be a mistake
  • They expected more from people with strong finance backgrounds
  • Recommended that students should proactively challenge each other on technicals- ex. a banker heard things that were off basis during a discussion, and no one in the group speaked up to correct them
  • Answers to technical questions need to be more clear and concise

Missed Professor Stowell's class on November 9th?

The session was video taped. The video along with the slides have been posted on Blackboard on his course site. Please be sure to watch it before next Tuesday's, Nov 16th class. Also, if you have any feedback on how the class may be improved, please do let us know!

Mock Interviews on Dec 1st

Be sure to sign up for a mock interview to get a gauge on your interview preparation prior to the Christmas break. These interviews will be conducted by 2nd years and will not be taped. Details are below in the Events section.

CMC Tips for Interviews

Be sure to sign up for one of the CMC's sessions "Promoting You: Tips for Interviewing". Attendance at the session is mandatory if you desire to participate in mock interviewing conducted by CMC in January. These mock interviews are videotaped. Sessions are scheduled on Tues. Nov 30th and Wed Dec 1st. RSVP through the CMC KelloggGroups calendar.

Wall Street Trek Mandatory Meeting

If you will be attending the Wall Street Trek, you must also attend the mandatory Wall Street Trek pre-departure meeting scheduled on Tuesday Nov 16th from 5:15-6:15pm in Jacobs G44. RSVP here.

Chicago Banking Trek on Dec 1st

We had favorable response for the Chicago banking trek and the leaders did a tremendous job kicking off this new initative for the IBCM club. Approximately 18 students will be attending the trek on Dec 1st and will visit 4 banks in the Chicago area. If you committed to going, please make sure you follow through on your committment as banks are expecting you! Please be sure to drop off your resume and deposit check to Prashanth Cherukuri.

Training the Street: Corp Valuation Book Deal

Training the Street has offered to give 50 Kellogg students a $60 discount on its "Fundamentals of Corporate Valuation" book. The reduced price is $40 plus $9 shipping. This deal runs through Sunday, November 28, 2010. Only the first 50 people will get this discount. To order, go to www.ttsuniversity.com and enter the following coupon code: J83YZ6. We found this book to be extremely helpful for the J.P. Morgan M&A Challenge, interview prep and internships.

Return trip to NYC for informational interviews?

If you are planning on returning to NYC after finals for follow-up informational interviews, it would be more efficient for bankers if you could coordinate your scheduling of interviews. Bankers really appreciate this! We have setup a Google doc link here for people to indicate when they are planning on returning to NYC so that you may coordinate amongst yourselves (e.g. share hotels, setups interviews, etc).

Making pitch shorter, tighter and more crisp in preparation for Wall Street Trek. Practice with your interview prep groups.

Conducting informational interviews with bankers. Target 3 to 6 interviews per bank.
