Special announcement from International Office - Scam alert: I-901 SEVIS Fee Payment
Important message for all F-1/J-1 International Students & J-1 Scholars : Recently, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) became aware that scammers (criminals trying to steal your money) are targeting international students/scholars in the Chicago area. These scammers are using the I-901 SEVIS Fee as their cover, and claim targeted students must pay $4000 to avoid deportation. Additionally, scammers are using the ‘Location Services’ app on students’ phones/tablets to find the students’ location and threaten them.
The SEVIS fee is required for all F-1 and J-1 individuals in the US, so it is highly likely that you already paid your fee! SEVP is currently trying to collect SEVIS fee payment from a very small number of international students/scholars. The IO has already contacted these students/scholars. SEVP will not call you! Also, the SEVIS fee is $200, not $4000! These incidents are currently under investigation by the Chicago Police Department and SEVP intends to cooperate fully and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
SEVP will not contact you by phone. Do not give bank/credit card information to anyone over the phone. If you think someone is trying to "scam" you, please contact your IO advisor immediately.
