FAQ:

1.  It seems that the KIN research topics offer a lot of flexibility, but I am concerned with the ambiguity and the impact of the projects?
The flexibility of the project themes is intentional.  We strongly believe that students working with their advisor should have the freedom to define the topic they want to address in order to make their participation in KIN Global both meaningful and impactful.  At the same time we are very aware that this initially creates some ambiguity and uncertainty.  For this reason we have created time in the first part of the winter quarter to specifically define project themes and deliverables.  We are looking for students that are comfortable with ambiguity and comfortable taking a leadership role in ensuring impact of their project. As students embark on their project work they will be able to clearly define scope and deliverables.

2.  If I am abroad for one semester how can I participate?
Applicants that are abroad during fall quarter should apply by the normal deadline and will be considered as full delegates.  Students that are abroad during winter or spring quarters are not able to apply to be student delegates, however there will be select volunteer opportunities during the conference in May.

3.  Can I choose my teammates?

You can preference teammates in the application.  We will do our best to match you, but there are no guarantees.

4.
As I complete my application do I need to select some of the questions that have addressed in the topic description or do I have more flexibility?
No, you should not select some of the questions that have been addressed in the topic descriptions.  On a contrary, we would like students to come up with their own questions or ideas that they would like to work on within one of the seven topics.  By proposing new ideas, students will have ability to demonstrate their strong interests and excitement, and that is what selection committee is looking for.

5.
Is it required to do a research paper as a final deliverable?
No, students will shape their final deliverable with professor, so they will have ability to choose the type of deliverable that is most appropriate for the project objectives.

6.  What is the correct email address where I should send my application?
Correct email address to submit your application is KIN@kellogg.northwestern.edu

7. Question 2 is asking for my top three choices, but can I select only one topic as that is the only topic I am interested in?
Yes, you can select only one topic; however you are decreasing your chances of being selected for two main reasons.  First, we are looking for a person that is interested in research topics, but is also interested in values and initiatives behind KIN; selecting one topic sends somewhat conflicting message.  Second, if you select only one topic and don't have interest in others, if we can't get you in the team for your topic, we will not be able to place you in any other team.

8. Does my answer to question 6 about my credit allocation impact my chances of being selected and am I committing myself to that option?
No and No.  Your answer to number 6 does not have any impact on your chances of being selected.  Also, by selecting your option you are not committing to that option.  If you are selected to be a KIN delegate, you will be asked to sign declaration where you will specify your credit allocation preferences and that will be biding declaration.

9.  What is the last add/drop date for this class?
Once you are selected to be a KIN delegate and once you are assigned to a topic, you will be asked to sign a team contract some time during December where you will declare that you will not leave your team/project.  As far registration process the last add/drop date is January 8th, 2010.
