Hub Workshop: Business Model Canvas Workshop

Come learn about the Business Model Canvas, a tool for organizing the key components of a start-up (or even established business).

  • The first half of the session will be a mix of short burst videos on different components of the BMC, coupled with filling out parts of the BMC for Front Row Education (Jackson's ed-tech startup) as an example
  • Following this we will break out individually or as small groups for 15 minutes to draft a quick version of a BMC for an idea you are working on.
    • While this session is valuable for individuals coming in with a particular startup idea, you do not need to have an idea of your own to participate - all are welcome! (That's what the small groups are for!)
  • To finish, we will walk through the canvasses of 1-2 groups - giving feedback, and suggesting ways they can test their hypotheses

When: Wednesday, November 13, 12:00 - 1:30 pm
Where: Jacobs 518
Registration Required (RSVP)

IDEX Accelerator: Fellowship program in India and Kenya

This is a great opportunity for Kellogg students who are interested in working with social enterprises in emerging markets. IDEX Accelerator is a 6 month fellowship program that places individuals in India and Kenya for 6 months. Fellows will get to get hand-on experience by learning and working with businesses that focus on clean energy, health care, education, and agriculture.

For more details, please see the attachment in this email.

University Private Equity Summit
Register for the 2014 University Private Equity Summit (UPES).  UPES is an excellent way for aspiring business professionals to connect and learn from the leaders in the venture capital, private equity, impact investing and other entrepreneurial industries. Last year’s conference had student representatives from a variety of schools including Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth, Northwestern, and many others, while also bringing speakers from firms such as 500 Startups, Kleiner Perkins, August Capital, Nike, TechCrunch, and Skullcandy. Earlybird registration is $325 and expires November 30th. After November 30th, the price will rise to $400. Register here.

William James Foundation, Sustainable Business Plan Competition
Our main program, a sustainable business plan competition, supports both those who are at the "just an idea" stage and those who might be a few years down the road, and are ready to take their company to the next level through boot-strapping or professional equity investments. Net Impact members have always been a significant portion of the entrepreneurs we have been able to support, and I hope to keep it that way. Our competition will have about $100k worth of services and cash for the best teams, but the real prize is the average of 20 pages of professional level peer review that we offer for the plans that are accepted into our feedback rounds. We work with entrepreneurs all over world - any age, any country. You just have to be building a company with a built-in social and/or environmental goal as part of how you make money. Most of the process is managed over email, and finalists are allowed to present by Skype if they can not attend in person. (Two of our recent winners did just that.)

The application process for our program is quite simple - there is a two page form at https://wjf.wufoo.com/forms/intent-to-compete-2014/. There is no fee to apply. Due November 15.

D-Prize
D-Prize is a call to the world’s brightest social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. Submit your idea to start a new distribution initiative in one of our five challenge areas. If selected, we will award you $10,000-$20,000 to pilot your idea over a three-month trial period, and connect you with mentorship from already successful social entrepreneurs. D-Prize will fund a total of 5-15 social entrepreneurs. If your pilot is successful, we will help you to launch your work and attract significant support.

Submissions Due: Saturday, November 30
