A McManus Minute
October 2009 Edition

Hello friends and neighbors!  Just a few friendly words...We limit these to once a month, so please help us out and take a quick minute to read it over!

Also, we will make hard copies available at the McManus front desk - feel free to pick one up!

If your JV did not receive this, please email Prasanna (pdhungel2010@kellogg.northwestern.edu). We want every McManus resident to be included!

1)      MEET THE MCMANUS STUDENT DIRECTORS:

We (Joel Stanwood – 2010, Prasanna Dhungel – 2010, Viviana Guerrero – 2011) enjoyed meeting many of you at our annual Welcome BBQ!  We look forward to meeting residents throughout the year and encourage you to come to the event programming (see #10 below) as we work to build the McManus community.  Also, we have a new Facebook group à join “The McManus Way”!  We welcome your questions and suggestions.

https://www.campusgroups.com/upload/6978_IMG_0765_3.JPG

One of us will be “on duty” after hours to address your URGENT needs, but we encourage you to bring all ordinary matters (e.g. package pickups, equipment loans, visitor keys, etc.) to the McManus front desk during regular desk hours.

Front desk hours are 8:30am-10pm on weekdays and 10am-6pm on the weekends.  Additional information such as lounge, patio, and playroom reservations, as well as storage application procedures can be found on the McManus website - https://kellogg-McManus.campusgroups.com

If you have further questions regarding

·         Lounge, Patio, Playroom reservations – please contact Viviana

·         Storage application – please contact Joel

·         Website and technology – please contact Prasanna

2)      PROTECT YOUR STUFF, BUT DON’T LOCK YOURSELF OUT!

One Bedroom C Style, Twin Studio, and 2 Bedroom apartments have locks on the interior doors.  Please make sure the lock on the knob is popped outward to avoid unintentionally locking yourself out!

We STRONGLY suggest that you always lock your apartment’s main entrance. We have had some problems with theft in the past and encourage you to safeguard your belongings.

We also suggest that you lock your bike properly. There is bike parking out front and also in the McManus garage. Your Marlok key grants you access to the bike cage in the garage. Please lock your frame AND your front tire to the bike racks to avoid finding one of these important pieces missing upon your return.

3) RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBORS – NO-SMOKING and QUIET HOURS POLICIES

You are not permitted to smoke in McManus or your apartment, even if a window is open and being used to disperse the smoke!  The smoke still travels into the hallways and into your neighbor’s apartments. Thanks for your respectful compliance.  Northwestern University Housing has a no-smoking policy and it aligns with Illinois state law. Smoking is strictly prohibited within McManus or within 25 ft from any entrance or vent.  We know it’s getting cold, but this policy is strictly enforced.  Violation of the no-smoking policy incurs penalties, up to and including removal from University Housing.

Your apartment is your home, you will wish to entertain there, and we encourage you to do so.  However, we ask that you be considerate of your neighbors.  Loud music and social gatherings should end by 10pm on weekdays and by midnight on weekends.

Please be aware that doors slamming and shouting down the hallways can wake your neighbors, and we have received several complaints already this year.  Door jamb dampers can be installed to help soften the impact – please submit a maintenance service request at the McManus front desk.  Thanks for your cooperation!

4) NEWSPAPERS IN THE LOBBY – HONOR CODE APPLIES

The deliverymen drop all papers (WSJ, FT, Tribune) in the lobby.  As a reminder, the Kellogg Honor Code applies to McManus as it does elsewhere in Kellogg, so please respect your neighbors and do not take a copy if you did not subscribe.  However, The Red Eye IS free and can be found in the main entryway before you enter the lobby.

5) COMPUTER LAB and STUDY ROOMS

KIS has finished installing brand new flat panel monitors on each of the floor study rooms.  Additionally, there are two brand new scanner/copiers in the Resource Room.  If you run into any issues with the computing facilities, please contact KIS at kis-help@kellogg.northwestern.edu. You can quickly report an issue through the Kellogg SERIAL.

You will come to LOVE our group and individual study rooms on snowy winter days!  You can book the group rooms through Outlook, but priority is always given to groups of 2 or more.  Groups may ask individuals to leave, but individuals can study in our own Quiet Study Room (QSR) on the 1st floor.

Thanks so much for doing your part to keep the printer area clean by recycling leftover printouts!

6) SPEAKING OF RECYCLING

In accordance with the Kellogg Greening Initiative, we encourage all residents to RECYCLE! You will need to separate paper from plastic and recycling bins can be found in the trash rooms on each floor. Also, to encourage your participation, individual recycling sorters have been distributed to all residents.

New energy efficient lighting was installed in the hallways on each floor.  After hours, half of the lights in the hallway will shut down to conserve energy.  New water-conserving toilets were installed in each apartment over the summer.  McManus is now saving 1.6 million gallons of water each year!

7) HEAT and AIR CONDITIONING

We are aware that the common areas get REALLY COLD when the air conditioning is on and REALLY HOT when the heater is on. This has been a long standing problem and due to the way the central heating/cooling system works, unfortunately, there’s not much we can do about it. Once the heat goes on for the season, it stays on unless there is an extended period of unseasonably warm weather. We thank you for your flexibility and encourage you to dress in layers when congregating in common areas.

However, you do have some control of the amount of heat released into your apartment. Too hot?  Close the radiator valve by turning clockwise.  Still hot to the touch?  Please submit a maintenance request.  Too cold?  Open the valve by turning counter clockwise completely.  If you have followed these instructions and still don’t have heat, please submit a maintenance request ASAP! We don’t want you to freeze this winter!

Also, the heaters make some popping and banging noises when the heat is turned on.  This is normal!  It is just a function of the steam-based centralized heating system that keeps Northwestern warm.

8) FLU SEASON and H1N1 UPDATE

We encourage residents to review the general H1N1 information and tips for reducing infection at http://www.nuhs.northwestern.edu/evanston/h1n1flu.aspx.  The CDC recommends that all students obtain both a seasonal influenza flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine this fall. Students should call the Health Service to make an appointment for vaccination.  Flu kits are available for students suspected of H1N1 infection.  Kits contain disposable thermometers, face masks, Purell, and instructions for self-care as well as the care of others are available at the McManus front desk.

If you have suspected or proven H1N1 influenza, the CDC recommends self-isolation.  This means that:

·         You should stay in your room unless you must go out

·         You should continue self-isolation until you are free from fever for 24 hours without using medicine (typically 3-5 days)

·         If you must go out, you should wear a mask when you are within six feet of others (but note that wearing a mask does not equal isolation)

In addition to these things, we suggest that you:

·         Talk to your roommate (your SD can help your roommate explore alternative housing if it is available)

·         Contact your professors to keep them updated

·         Let a McManus Student Director know!

Self-screening forms are now available online for students who are concerned that they may have had a significant exposure to the H1N1 virus, at http://www.nuhs.northwestern.edu/evanston/Default.aspx

You should feel free to speak with and ask questions of Health Service staff. In addition to the main Health Service telephone number (847-491-8100), students are encouraged to call the Health Service H1N1 Hotline (“SwineLine”) at 847-467-4161 during regular business hours for general information and questions.

9) SIDEWALK CONSRUCTION

The City of Evanston will be replacing the sidewalks on Orrington Avenue and Church Street adjacent to the Evanston Public Library, but not in front of McManus.  The construction project is targeted to be finished by November 30th.

10) EVENTS – Now for the fun stuff!

Thanks to everyone who came out for the Welcome BBQ, Meet Your Neighbors, Fire Safety training, the Winter Shopping Trip, and the Zipcar event!

Meet Your Neighbors Wrap-up - Thanks to everyone for your participation!  We had approximately 85 residents participate.  Now, for the results of the competition to see which floor in McManus is the most social, as evidenced by the number of residents you were able to cram into one photo.  This year the award goes to the 7th floor !!  Congrats 7th floor residents, you are officially recognized as the coolest and most outgoing floor in McManus.

For those who couldn’t make it out, we have a full schedule of events this quarter and encourage you to get to know your neighbors. This is the best part of living in the McManus community!
