Conversation with Founders of Meliora K, Kate and Mike '12 “What do you mean, Proctor & Gamble agrees to reduce the amount of cancer-causing chemicals?" That was Kate's first reaction when reading about the reformulation of Tide Free and Clear, a laundry detergent marketed to parents as 'free of harmful chemicals.' As she learned more about the detergent market, Kate was propelled into action, and formulated her own laundry detergent and cleaning products based on simpler ingredients. In 2013, she founded Meliora K, a socially-focused business that illustrates that companies don't need to rely on secret formulas and mysterious chemicals. Screening of Poverty, Inc. The Africa Business Club and the Net Impact Club are thrilled to screen Poverty, Inc! Co-Producer, Mark Weber, will be at the screening. The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of the development narrative. But the results have been mixed, in some cases even catastrophic, and developing world leaders have become increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing on perspectives gathered from over 150 interviews shot over 4 years in 20 countries, Poverty, Inc. explores the hidden side of doing good. From disaster relief to TOMs Shoes, from adoptions to agricultural subsidies, Poverty, Inc. follows the butterfly effect of our most well-intentioned efforts and pulls back the curtain on the poverty industrial complex - the multi-billion dollar market of NGOs, multilateral agencies, and for-profit aid contractors. Are we catalyzing development or are we propagating a system in which the poor stay poor while the rich get hipper? When: April 21, 5:15-7:30pm Where: Jacobs 101 Register: Register Here
