The Lavin Bernick Executive Chats series gives Kellogg students an opportunity to engage with an esteemed executive or civic leader presenting his or her perspectives on leadership. The sessions are meant to be dialogue-driven, and informal, with a limited number of seats available at each session. They provide an intimate forum for in-depth conversations. This session is open to full-time Kellogg students.

Melissa Bean is a Vice Chairman for JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Chairman of the Midwest. As such, she serves as the senior executive across all lines of business and functional areas in the Midwest region. Bean applies a results-driven approach in partnering with experts across the firm to deliver on our commitment to the clients and communities we serve.
Prior to joining JPMorgan Chase, Bean served as President and CEO of the Executives’ Club of Chicago, a premier executive networking and speaker forum. She partnered closely with a prestigious board of directors, comprised of CEOs from Chicago’s largest and fastest-growing firms, to share best practices.
Bean served as a Member of the U.S. Congress from 2005 to 2011 (8th District – IL) and was an active leader on the House Financial Services and Small Business Committees. She led a task force that wrote key provisions of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, aiming to protect investors without stifling growth and innovation. She also co-authored key amendments in the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, which authorized up to $30 billion for small business lending.
Earlier in her career, Bean spent almost twenty years in the high tech industry. After managing sales organizations at Dataflex, SynOptics, Motorola/UDS and Arrow Electronics, she founded SRI, a consulting firm providing market segmentation and channel optimization strategies to Fortune 1000 high tech clients.
Committed to creating career pathways for community college graduates, she serves as Vice Chair of the board for One Million Degrees. Bean is also on the boards of World Business Chicago, Junior Achievement and The Executives’ Club of Chicago. She is a member of The Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago, The Chicago Network, The Chicago Club, and the University Club.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa, from Roosevelt University. Bean and her husband reside in Barrington, Illinois and have two adult daughters.
