Fewer, Bigger, Bolder: Driving Profitable Growth Through Focus
Conventional wisdom suggests that growth is about “more” – more products, more categories, more brands and more markets. However, Professor Sawhney will argue that this approach is exactly the opposite of what business leaders need to do to drive profitable growth. The “growth through more” approach diffuses the organization’s efforts over too many fronts. It also increases the complexity of the organization and its operations. In their upcoming book Fewer, Bigger, Bolder, Professor Sawhney and colleague Sanjay Khosla (former President, Developing Markets at Kraft Foods) suggest that “growth through less” is the correct prescription. They suggest that focus is a powerful engine for growth. Seemingly mature businesses can be energized by making fewer but larger bets, by crafting a simple but powerful vision, by unleashing the potential of key people and by relentless execution. They propose a blueprint for driving profitable growth called Focus7 that overturns several orthodoxies on growth. The Focus7 approach has been tested and refined based on personal experience across different industries and geographical markets. The steps in Focus7 span the entire process of leading a transformational growth initiative, from strategy and vision to execution and measurement.
