Prospective Students
Students interested in Marketing have a robust set of activities to pursue during their time at Kellogg. The Marketing Club is one of the most active student-led clubs on campus and organizes a variety of academic and experiential programs throughout the school year. Other Marketing-focused initiatives not directly coordinated by the Marketing Club also allow Marketing students to deepen their expertise in the field, gain leadership experience, and broaden their exposure to the functions, themes, and trends of Marketing in the business world.
Here are some of the more prominent Marketing-related activities held throughout the school year:
Marketing Industry East Coast & West Coast Treks
These are two- or three-day field trips to New York and San Francisco to meet with leadership from top brand, retail and consumer-focused firms. The visits to company offices typically involve a combination of panel discussions, presentations, office tours, networking time, Q&A, and other informational sessions designed to give Kellogg students an inside perspective into how a Marketing-oriented organization functions.
Company Shadow Days
These are day-long sessions held at the offices of a leading brand or consumer packaged goods company designed to expose Kellogg students to the inner workings of potential future employers. Shadow days also offer the companies an opportunity to get to know interested Kellogg students a little better. The shadow days often involve small group meetings with brand managers and executives giving Kellogg students unique exposure to the work behind leading products and brands.
Kellogg Marketing Competition
This is an annual contest between teams competing to market a real product. Participants must create a segment, target and positioning proposal and present it to a panel of Marketing executives and competition judges brought in from the industry. Participants then must create a Marketing campaign and market their products over the course of several weeks in and around Kellogg. The competition culminates in a TG Mart where each team manages a booth from which they sell their product. Winners are decided on a variety of factors, including feedback from target consumers and judges, as well as the quality and effectiveness of their campaign and salesmanship.
Kellogg Marketing Conference
The annual Kellogg Marketing Conference attracts speakers and panelists from top positions in the business world. Held over two days in the Winter, the Conference is entirely student led and features keynote speakers, breakout panel discussions, Q&A, and networking opportunities.
Corporate Case Competitions
Throughout the year, various top brand and Marketing firms hold case competitions to give students the chance to analyze and create a Marketing campaign to be judged by executives from the host firm. Typical case competitions are sponsored by Kraft, Coca-Cola, General Mills, Johnson & Johnson, and other leading consumer-driven companies.
MBA Case Competitions
Business schools throughout the world host case competitions and Kellogg students are invited to participate in them. These are great opportunities for Kellogg students to build their skills as marketers and engage with Marketing students from other business schools.
Second-year Mentoring
Second-year students who have experienced a summer internship in Marketing (or who have Marketing experience prior to Kellogg) have a unique perspective to offer first-year students. Typically around preparing for interviews and cases, second-year students pair up with small groups of first-years to provide guidance and feedback on the recruiting process.
Guest speakers
Throughout the school year, Chief Marketing Officers, Brand Managers, and other business leaders with relevant Marketing experience come through Kellogg to present on different topics related to product innovation, brand management, advertising, current trends in Marketing, and other areas of interest to Marketing students.
Workshops/ Lunch & Learns
The Marketing Club will often host informal sessions over lunch throughout the year on specific topics in Marketing, such as digital Marketing, brand extensions, user-generated content, product launches, etc. As with many other initiatives at Kellogg, ideas for these workshops are generated by students based on their need to be informed about the latest in the Marketing world.
